AREQUIPA, THE WHITE CITY

GENERAL INFORMATION

LOCATION 

In the Southern part of Peru. More than half of its territory is above 3,000 meters above sea level, because its on the occidental part of the Andes.

EXTENSION
The Department of Arequipa has an extension of 63,345 square kms.

POPULATION
It has a population of 1'200,000 inhabitants.

CAPITAL OF THE DEPARTMENT
Arequipa, is located at an altitude of 2,350 meters above sea level, its considered the second city most important in Peru. Also called the "White City" because of the ashlars (volcanic rock) used in its constructions.

CLIMATE: Warm and dry with almost always clear skies, especially in April to October. The average temperature minimum of 5șC and maximum of 23șC.

ACCESS / APPROACH: 
By Land: Distance from Lima: 1,081 Kms. On the Southern Pan-American Highway, after leaving Camana, the road turns to the east from the coast to enter the Sierra, climbing the mountains until it reaches the beautiful valley of the Chili river, where the city of Arequipa is situated at the foot of the inactive volcano, Misti and of the Chachani and Pichu Pichu.
By Air: The airport is located at 9 kms. from the city. Flight time from Lima is a hour and 10 min; from Cusco, 30 min; from Juliaca, 20 min. 
Also there is a train that goes to Juliaca and Puno as well as with Cusco.
